Workshops, Lectures, Installations throughout the year
The Peoples Museum consists of a large map of the Kitchener area that fills the entire floor, while the walls contain images and text, highlighting points of interest in local geologic and human history, relating to our map. Vistors to the museum will be asked to share their own stories to document and include on the map and walls, acumulating a broad range of histories to more accuratly dipict a sense of place inherient to the communities identity.

The map fills the entire space of City Hall's ARTSPACE at Berlin Tower, approx 29' by 11'. The map is oriented with the outside, as in North on the map matches North on the compass.

About the Map

Jefferson's contour line map is based on a 2010 Government of Canada topographical survey, cross-referenced with Google Earth. The scale is approximately 1 kilometre for every 10 cm. Each plywood panel represents approximately 24 x 12 kilometres.

The map is detailed with wooded areas showing a specific density and maturity, a section of the Grand River and its tributaries, existing rail line in use in various capacities, and pretty much all highways, roads, and cul-de-sacs. The map is barely a few years out of date, yet already needs updating for many road extensions and round-a-bouts, particularly in re-developing neighborhoods. There are actually many small hamlets and towns that have been amalgamated and make up the City of Kitchener we know today.
